What are we working on at Shepherd.com?

We want to become the platform super readers use to explore and track their to-be-read pile. How?

  • Make it easy to add a book to your TBR pile.

  • Make it incredibly easy to sort your TBR pile by genre, topic, theme, trope, mood, age group, author, and much more.

  • Make it easy to do things like "show me all the science fiction books in my TBR list that readers loved for the characters.ā€ And other personalizations to help you figure out what you want to read next.

Very early mockups, still playing with UX ideasā€¦

They are live, and try out the first ones we added as part of testing:

We found a few areas we need to improve upon; once we fix those this week, we will add even more! I am also looking at how we can build our notification system for readers who want to know when a new book in a series is out.

Subscribers can now adjust how often they get the book recommendation email (every week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, or 4 weeks). And now, we are adding the ability to adjust the variables that build the email.

We are working on a massive upgrade to our bookshelves. The additions will make it a lot more fun to browse science fiction, fantasy, nonfiction, and other genre sections, as well as age groups and topics (tropes, themes, and moods coming later in 2025).

Highlights from the build blog:

What am I reading?

I just finished...

  • The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxyā€”I listened to this on audiobook with my son. He loved it and laughed a lot! I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read it in my teens or twenties. I am not sure how I missed it at that age šŸ˜ƒ.

  • He Who Fights with Monsters books 1 through 4 - I liked this series, but as I got further in, it started to get stuck. Book 4 was rough and I have to stop there. The earth bit of the story just felt like it needed some heavy editing and improvements (it was born on Royal Road, and then moved into book format. It was a fun read, and if you love LitRPG, you might love this one.

I am reading...

What have I been up to outside of Shepherd?

I took my son to Carcassonne (France) for the weekend. We had a blast exploring the city and doing some nearby hikes. It was good to get out of the city and into nature.

My mom and stepdad are in town for three weeks. We are showing them around Bordeaux and then going on a two-week road trip through part of Ireland. I am looking forward to it, as I havenā€™t seen much outside of DublinšŸ˜€.

Have a great week,
Thanks, Ben

Fantastic Sunday hike at a Cathar castle near Carcassonne.
