Recommended Read:
I highly recommend you read this article, as Google is destroying the independent web. Iāve talked about this a lot, but Google is trying to keep everyone on Google.com so they can make more ad money. They are purposefully destroying the quality of their search listings because it forces people to click on ads or their AI bots (and this has been documented in their email exchanges from top exectuvies in court cases).
Reminder: We have a 100% personalized book recommendation email based on your favorite reads!

This month, we have some very different lists, and hopefully one clicks for you š.
What are we working on at Shepherd.com?
We are building our full reader app!
It will be like Goodreads but smarter and deeply personalized.

We are currently working to build a big book database (more details here). Why is this so important? Shepherd currently only has ~100,000 books in its database, as we only add them when a reader or author picks one of them to share. This means that when we roll out a feature like our 3 favorite reads of the year, readers often have to click āAdd Missing Bookā and tell us what they want to add.
So, we are looking at Open Libraryās data and using it to populate a bigger database of books. With this first version, we aim to have book readers want to add ~90% of the time. As the app grows, we will work to improve that further.
If you want to test the new app as we get further along, please fill this out.
Highlights from the build blog:
What am I reading?
I just finished...
I reread Enderās Game by Orson Scott Card. My son might read it soon, and I havenāt read it in a long time. Such a sci-fi classic!
Abundance by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson - We read this as part of a family book club, as we wanted to see what all the noise was about. It was a good summary of various challenges the USA and the world face. I am hopeful that, over time, we can implement more fixes in energy policy and housing.
The Hobbit - Iāve never read it, and my son and I were reading it together. It was a good short story, and I can see how this blew minds in the early 1900s.
The First Command series by Michael Simon - This was a fun military science fiction series, and I am looking forward to reading book #4 when it comes out.
I am reading...
Shockwave Rider by John Brunner - This is one of my dadās favorite books, and we are reading it as part of our family book club. I am digging it so far.
The Evening and the Morning by Ken Follett - Iāve been slowly working my way through the Kingsbridge series, and this is book 4. Iām excited that it went back in time after the 3rd book (set in the late 900s CE).
What have I been up to outside of Shepherd?
We are on a family vacation in Belgium. Weāve had a great time (apart from a rooster that likes to wake us up at 6 am). My son and I did a 3-day 131km biking trip along a converted rail route. He was especially excited as it went from Luxembourg to Belgium and finished in Germany. And he did his first 50km day, which is pretty awesome for an 8-year-old.
I hope your weekend is going well, and hopefully you are reading a great book,
Thanks, Ben
