My 10 Favorite Book Lists For September…

This month, we have some very different lists, and hopefully, one will click for you 😃.

What are we working on at Shepherd.com?

We are building our full reader app!

It will be like Goodreads but smarter and deeply personalized.

Our part-time designer will start working on MVP elements this week. Our part-time developer is working on building a large database of books and exploring ways to do it on a budget using Open Library data.

The designer and I are working to nail down:

  • Smart folders and how those will work in version 1.

  • Final user folder design (we are about 90% done there).

  • Tracking book series and experimenting with how it will work.

If you'd like to test the new app as we progress, please fill this out.

Highlights from the build blog:

What am I reading?

I just finished...

  • I finished books four and five of the Kingsbridge series by Ken Follett. He is a fantastic writer, and I love how he throws you into a really distinct era with each book. The Armor of Light was excellent as always. I wonder if he will do any more as we get closer to the modern era?

  • Shockwave Rider by John Brunner - This is one of my dad’s favorite books, and we are reading it as part of our family book club. It is 50 years old and incredible to see this weird vision of both the internet and future society.

I am reading...

  • The Shattering Peace by John Scalzi. This is book 7 in the series Old Man’s War. I reread the series on my bike ride so I could read this new entry (I think I had previously only read the first 2 in the series before I lost track of it). It's been excellent so far, and it's fantastic to be back in this universe. I like how he jumps around to different characters within it.

  • They Thought They Were Free: The Germans, 1933 - 1945, by Milton Mayer. I am almost done with this one. I had to leave it at home during my bike ride, so I am about to finish the last few chapters.

What have I been up to outside of Shepherd?

I've just returned from a 3-week bike trip from Belgium down through Switzerland, and eventually ended up in Nimes, France. I rode 1,269 km with ~16,000m of elevation gain. I’m a bit tired, but happy to be home and excited to be working on the new app for readers 😃.

I hope your week is going well,
Thanks, Ben
